Abstract

This qualitative, exploratory study examined the lived experiences and insights of hypertensive patients regarding community pharmacy services for hypertension management in Davao City, Philippines. The research specifically examined how patients perceive the roles of pharmacists in medication management, lifestyle guidance, and accessibility of care. Using in-depth interviews (IDIs) with ten purposively selected adult hypertensive patients, thematic analysis revealed three essential dimensions of pharmacist roles: (1) providing safe and informed medication support, (2) guiding holistic wellness and lifestyle practices, and (3) offering easy access to hypertension point-of-care services. Participants emphasized that pharmacists go beyond dispensing to verify prescriptions, recommend cost-effective alternatives, reinforce adherence through follow-ups, and promote healthy lifestyle practices such as dietary modification and regular physical activity. Moreover, pharmacists were found to bridge accessibility gaps in primary care by offering free blood pressure screenings and walk-in consultations. Despite positive experiences, financial constraints, time limitations, and personal or cultural beliefs hinder consistent utilization of pharmacy services. The findings highlight the growing contribution of pharmacists as community-based healthcare providers and underscore the need for institutional support, structured follow-up systems, and enhanced pharmacist-patient communication to strengthen hypertension management at the grassroots level.
