Abstract

This phenomenological study explores the well-being of amateur gymnast student-athletes from Region XII, Philippines, by examining their lived experiences, coping mechanisms, and the factors influencing their physical, emotional, and mental health. The research design is qualitative, with data collected through in-depth interviews (IDI) and focus group discussions (FGD). Participants were selected from regional to national-level competitions such as the Regional Meets, Palarong Pambansa, and Batang Pinoy, ensuring a diverse representation of student-athletes. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes, including the role of discipline, emotional support, and goal setting in their well-being, as well as the impact of social support systems on their mental resilience. Findings reveal that gymnast student-athletes in Region XII face significant stress from balancing academic and athletic demands, yet they also exhibit strong resilience and motivation through goal-oriented engagement, positive relationships, and personal growth. The study emphasizes the necessity of creating supportive environments for athletes to thrive both academically and athletically. These insights contribute to the development of wellness programs and mental health support systems for student-athletes in the Philippines.
