This qualitative multiple case study explored the experiences, opportunities, and drawbacks of using AI writing tools in research writing among Senior High School students in selected public and private institutions in Region XI. Five cases were examined through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis of actual student responses. The findings revealed six emerging themes on students' experiences with AI writing tools and another six themes describing the opportunities and drawbacks of their use in research writing. Most cases showed similar experiences in using AI for grammar, organization, confidence-building, and receiving positive or neutral teacher feedback. However, differences emerged in AI dependence, originality, fact-checking, and ethical awareness. While some balanced AI use with critical thinking, others showed over-reliance and less engagement with their own content.
