VOICES from the Classroom: Understanding the Perspectives of Students as Regards Numerical Literacy APPLICATION

Abstract

This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to explore and understand the lived experiences of students as regards numerical literacy application. The participants of this study were the private elementary school students in District 1, Davao City, who were selected through purposive sampling. Utilizing in-depth interviews and focus-group discussion, the research explored into the challenges encountered, coping mechanisms utilized and insights offered to the academe and society. Thematic analysis revealed four key themes: practical numeracy, applying life skills Math, numerical cognition challenges, and numerical insecurity. Despite these struggles, students demonstrated resilience adopting five coping mechanisms: practicing repeatedly, seeking help and guidance, using different learning strategies, engaging in reflective learning, developing self-reliance and confidence. The study also identified four crucial insights for the academe and society. First, it highlighted emotional impact of overcoming math challenges. Second, it emphasized the effective strategies for teaching math. Next, it underscored the importance of numerical literacy in daily life. Lastly, it recognized the learning struggles. This research, contributes to a deeper understanding of how numerical literacy shapes students’ academic performance and life readiness, informing future educational practices and support systems for both teachers and students.
