Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis adversely affects the self-awareness of active tuberculosis patients from a physical, psychological, and social perspective. Overall, anti-TB treatment has had a positive effect on improving health-related quality of life in patients.

Objective: This research conducted a systematic review to determine adherence to the TB directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) program and the quality of life of people living with pulmonary tuberculosis.

Methods: Three scientific databases were screened, generating 61 studies (PubMed = 23, Google Scholar = 32, and ScienceDirect = 6). After careful deliberation of the titles and abstracts, only seven studies met the prescribed inclusion criteria, which were then subjected to a systematic review and presented in the participant-intervention-comparison-outcome (PICO) table.

Results: The results emphasized that adherence to the DOTS program improved patient treatment adherence, leading to enhanced mental, physical, and social well-being. On the other hand, non-adherence to the TB-DOTS program leads to poor health-related quality of life despite the new therapeutic strategies and free availability of medicines.

Conclusion: The disease had a negative impact on the health-related quality of life of TB patients across all domains. Therefore, strict implementation and follow-ups of the TB-DOTS program must be supervised to improve the quality of life of people living with pulmonary tuberculosis.
